The Phoenix VA Health Care System -- comprised of the Carl T. Hayden Veterans Affairs Medical Center and ten community care clinics -- is categorized as a Clinical Referral Level 1b facility. The facility serves more than 95,000 Veterans in central Arizona, including the rapidly expanding metropolitan Phoenix area. There are more than 322,000 Veterans who reside within the facility's primary service area. The medical center provides acute medical, surgical, and psychiatric inpatient care, as well as rehabilitation medicine and neurological care. The facility has a more than $650 million annual operating budget. The facility operates with the core values of integrity, commitment, advocacy, respect, and excellence.

Dr. Alyshia Smith's Bio:
Dr. Alyshia Smith was appointed as the Medical Center Director of the Phoenix VA Health Care System on June 21, 2020 after having served as the Interim Medical Center Director since October 2019. In this position, she oversees all aspects of this tertiary care hospital and the full range of Primary Care, Specialty Care, Mental Health and Allied Health and Rehabilitative Services to over 99,000 Arizona Veterans. The hospital operating budget exceeds $800 million, with over 3500 employees. Established in 1949, the health care system includes community-based health care clinics in Gilbert, Scottdale, Surprise, Payson (Contract), Show Low, Globe, Southwest Phoenix, and two in Central Phoenix.
Dr. Smith joined the Phoenix VA Health Care System in September 2015 as the Associate Director for Patient Care Services (ADPCS) and Nurse Executive. As the longest serving Phoenix VA executive leader, Dr. Smith possesses a deep understanding of the Culture of Phoenix, strong community relationships, and clinical expertise. As the ADPCS, she was directly responsible for the leadership and strategic direction for over 1,350 staff in Nursing, Social Work, Sterile Processing Service, and the Chaplain Service. In 2019, Dr. Smith served as the Deputy Chief Nursing Officer for VHA, with over 100,000 in the Nursing Corps. She also served on the National Nurse Executive Leadership Board and as the VISN 22 lead ADPCS.
Dr. Smith began her VA career as the Deputy Chief Nurse at the Washington DC VA Medical Center in 2010, where she was responsible for nursing operations. As Deputy Chief Nurse, she led the implementation of a hospital-wide cardiac monitoring system, facilitated the opening of the Emergency Department (ED) Overflow Unit and ED Fast Track Area, a newly constructed inpatient unit and short stay unit.
Prior to her tenure in the VA, Dr. Smith spent 20 years in a large, complex private hospital system where she held roles as Registered Nurse, Nurse Manager and Senior Nursing Director for Medical Surgical Services and later for Professional Practice.
Dr. Smith earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a Master of Science and Doctor of Nursing Practice from the University of Maryland, and a Post Masters Certificate in Business and Health Care from Johns Hopkins University. She has served as clinical faculty with nursing programs at Georgetown University and the University of Maryland. She is board certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) as a Nurse Executive, Advanced. She is a member of the American Organization of Nurse Leaders (AONL), and the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE).
