Earned Income Tax Credit and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Available to Eligible Individuals and Families
Valley of the Sun United Way has teamed up with Bank of America Charitable Foundation, the Governor's Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Task Force and several community organizations to increase the number of individuals filing for the EITC this tax season. United Way and its partners are committed to helping individuals and families achieve greater financial stability. The EITC represents a tremendous opportunity for many Valley residents to work toward that goal.
The Earned Income Tax Credit is one of the largest federal tax benefit programs. Individuals and families who earned less than $39,783 and meet other criteria may be eligible for a credit of up to $4,716. In 2007, nearly 10,000 eligible Arizona families claimed the EITC at volunteer tax assistance (VITA) sites, resulting in nearly $13 million in additional tax refunds. Each year, many individuals who may be eligible for EITC remain unaware of the program's availability.
Individuals and families that meet EITC eligibility requirements are encouraged to visit VITA sites which are available throughout Maricopa County until April 15. Local trained volunteers will be on hand to help prepare basic tax returns free of charge for those who qualify. Click here for the following resources: a printable flyer with EITC information | a VITA TV spot (QuickTime MP4 format).
For individuals looking to apply for EITC, please visit http://www.irs.gov/ for eligibility details. To locate a VITA site near you, contact Community Information and Referral at 602-263-8856 or visit http://www.cir.org/.
